How do I redeem Marriott Rewards Points for hotel stays?
Marriott hotel categories and tiers help determine how many points are required for a free night. The general relationship is that higher categories/tiers represent higher quality hotels. However, a Residence Inn in one neighborhood might be a Category 1 while in another region it is Category 3, and determinants could be anything from the size of the facilities, neighborhood safety, age of buildings, etc. Although the category of a hotel can give you a general idea of the quality of the hotel brand, it is always best to research into the specific hotel you wish to stay at.
Also, When you redeem 4 nights with Rewards points, you get a 5th night free. This is a great way to increase your Rewards points value. To see an example of how to calculate the return value of Rewards points.
Redeem PointSavers: In a handful of locations around the world, you can redeem PointSaver hotels using less Reward points. If a Category 1 Hotel costs 7,500 Reward points to redeem, then you can use 7,500 PointSavers to redeem a Category 2 Hotel. If a Category 2 Hotel costs 10,000 Reward points, then a Category 3 Hotel costs 10,000 PointSavers. When PointSavers are available, the option will display under room details when you search for a hotel. However, there are only a few hotels around the world that offer PointSavers at a time.

How do I redeem Marriott Rewards Points for upgrades?
Reward members can upgrade point-redeemed hotel rooms for points or cash. This is not available at all locations, and you will need an upgrade reward for each night in an upgraded room. A paid upgrade is usually between $50-$200, or you can upgrade via reward points for 5,000 points each.
- Upgrade reward offerings vary by hotel and season, and sometimes an upgrade requires payment in the local currency and cannot be purchased directly with Marriott Reward points. Most rooms require only one upgrade reward per night, but in some cases, multiple upgrade rewards may be required for each night.
- Sometimes, none of the hotels you contact may be able to give you an upgrade, because all the upgrade rooms have already been booked. Sometimes, every hotel has an available upgrade, so this could be a hit or miss situation. Call ahead early on to see if they can offer a premium room and suite upgrade for your points.
