The membership levels of the IHG Rewards Club program are divided and based on paid nights per calendar year: Club member, Gold Elite, Platinum Elite, and Spire Elite.  Here are some of the benefits of being a Rewards member.

Club Member

Qualification: This is the status you earn by signing up for free. Becoming a member enables you to earn and redeem points at over 4,900 IHG hotels worldwide. Join IHG Rewards Club today.

Benefits: Club members get access to free internet as well as the daily weekday paper. Points can be redeemed for over 4,900 IHG hotels and over 400 airlines worldwide, with no blackout dates for Reward Nights.

Gold Elite

Qualification: Staying at least 15 nights, earning 20,000 Elite qualifying points or staying 10 nights in 3 different IHG hotel brands within one year will earn you Gold Elite status.

Benefits: As a Gold Elite, you will receive all the aforementioned benefits of a Club member, as well as priority check-in on guaranteed reservations, an exclusive Gold customer service phone number, and a 10% bonus on base points.

Platinum Elite

Qualification: Staying at least 50 Elite qualifying nights, earning 60,000 Elite qualifying points, or staying 40 Elite qualifying nights at 4 IHG hotel brands in a calendar year will earn you Platinum Elite status.

Benefits: As a Platinum Elite, you will receive all the aforementioned benefits of a Gold Elite. You also have the ability to rollover your extra nights towards next year’s qualification, priority check-in on guaranteed reservations, complimentary room upgrades, guaranteed room availability, access to exclusive Platinum Elite Phone Number, and a 50% bonus on all base points.

Spire Elite

Qualification: Staying at least 75 Elite qualifying nights or earning 75,000 Elite qualifying points.

Benefits: This is the newest top membership level that IHG has unveiled, and its perks include 100% bonus points on stays, rollover nights, room upgrades, and an exclusive Choice Benefit of receiving either 25,000 points or upgrading a friend/family member to Platinum status.

IHG®Rewards Club Reward Nights consumed by members will be counted as Qualifying Nights towards Elite membership qualifications.

Platinum elite status with IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card

There is no fast way to Spire Elite via hotel stays. One shortcut would be to apply for the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card, which is currently offering a sign-up bonus of 60,000 Elite qualifying points when you spend $1,000 within the first 3 months; this comes with automatic Platinum elite status (which has requirements 40 nights/40,000 points each year). The first year has no annual fee; thereafter the annual fee is $49, but you also receive an annual free night to use at any IHG hotel worldwide, which cancels out the fee.

IHG program benefits are intended to reward travelers who stay at IHG hotels and resorts often, and are thus likely to use their membership points on hotel-related activities regularly. Therefore, in order to keep your account active and retain your points, you must use what points you have accrued.

What is the point expiration policy?

Beginning in May of 2016, in order to maintain an active account and keep all of your points, you must earn or redeem points at least once from participating IHG hotels and other approved associations within a 12-month period. If you do not do this, your points will expire.

These rules, however, will not apply to elite members of the program; if you are an elite member and do not keep your account active, you will then be downgraded in member status. After that, you have another year to keep your downgraded account active before it expires.

Though these requirements are more strict than some other hotel chains—many of which offer 24 months to maintain an account—it is relatively easy to sustain your active account and keep your accrued points. All you need to do is redeem, earn, or transfer your points in qualifying transactions once per year.

Examples of qualifying earn activities include: a qualifying stay at any IHG hotel or resort, purchases on your IHG credit card, earning points via a promotional offer, or earning points with any IHG Rewards Club partner. Examples of qualifying redemption activities include booking a Reward Night stay, donating points to charity, redeeming points for travel via Flights Anywhere or Cars Anywhere products, or making a purchase from the IHG online redemption catalog. There are many ways to do this, but the best and easiest way to do so is by holding an IHG member credit card.

Hold on to your points with IHG credit card

The IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card from Mastercard is the simplest way to keep your account active, earn points, and reap other rewards. For every one dollar spent at IHG hotels and resorts, you can earn five points, and then two more for every dollar spent at other locations, and on daily purchases—groceries, gas, clothing, and more. You also achieve platinum elite status simply by being a cardmember. If you spend $1,000 or more within the first three months of opening the account, you gain 60,000 extra points and a free night at any of the over 4,900 IHG hotels. There is no introductory annual fee.

Among other benefits, you have no defined spending limit, you have access to tickets for special events, shopping specials, dining at the best restaurants, no fraud liability, travel insurance, and much, much more. Any bonus points you acquire while using your card can be redeemed at participating hotels. You need to join the IHG Rewards Club program to start earning IHG points, which is easy and free. Once you are a member, you have the option to earn either Rewards points or airlines miles; the program defaults to points. How many IHG Rewards Points do I earn per night? The number of Reward points you earn varies by IHG hotel brand. As an IHG Rewards Club member (basic level), you can earn 10 base points per eligible $1 USD spent at all InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Hualuxe, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn Club Vacations, and Even Hotels;  earn 5 base points per eligible $1 USD spent at all Staybridge and Candlewood Suites; and earn 2.5 base points per eligible $1 USD  on all qualified room rates and incidental expenditures for stays at The Residence Suites Dubai F.C. or Asiana Reside Saigon Residences.

Are Rewards points and miles interchangeable?

IHG^® Rewards Points can be converted to airline miles from one of IHG’s 50 airline partners. They must be converted at a 10,000-point minimum, and in increments of 1,000 points. When miles are transferred to a frequent flyer account, both accounts must be under the same name. If you are converting already-earned points to airline miles, the posting time of frequent flyer miles varies by airline and can take up to six weeks to be credited to your frequent flyer account. Currently, airline miles cannot be converted into IHG® Rewards Club points.

The Fine Print

• IHG® Rewards Points are earned for stays beginning with the date of your enrollment in the program. Points will be awarded only for qualifying room rates booked through IHG central reservation offices, IHG web sites, IHG travel agents, or directly at the hotel; you cannot earn points when booking on third-party sites.
• IHG® Rewards Club members will not earn points during a stay or retroactively on any reservations booked through Online Travel Agencies.
• Only one room will be credited per member per night, except at U.S. and Canadian hotels (except InterContinental), you can collect for all eligible charges for multiple hotel rooms (less than 10), if they are in the same hotel. Make sure to provide your IHG® Rewards Club membership number during reservation and hotel check-in.
• There are two types of points, elite qualifying points and non-elite qualifying points. Only elite qualifying points count towards achieving elite status; these points are earned through paying for hotel stays and spending with partner vendors. Non-elite qualifying points are promotional points, purchased points, and transferred points, which can still cover free nights and other award purchases, but will not be counted towards elite qualification.
• As of January 2015, the newest brand, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants does not participate in the rewards program.

You have earned piles of IHG rewards points from hotel stays and all-qualifying charges. These points can be redeemed for free hotel nights, hotel upgrades, airline miles and spent on other rewards such as transportation, travel packages, and shopping vouchers. Learn about the different ways you can redeem rewards, and how to maximize your IHG Rewards points value.

Redeem IHG points for hotel stays

IHG has some of the most fair redemption prices of all the hotel chains. The number of points required for Reward nights ranges from 10,000 to 50,000 and varies by property. IHG’s Hotels Anywhere program lets you use points or points+cash to book nights at over 70,000 hotels worldwide that are not affiliated with IHG. Below are the numbers of points needed for one free night at an IHG hotel:

Book IHG award nights

To book award nights, go to IHG.com, choose the destination and the date. In the rate preference dropdown box, select “Rewards Nights”; In your search results, you will see the hotel list along with the room rate and points required for the room.

If you don’t have enough points, you can choose cash+points to pay the room rate.  You may choose to redeem IHG^® Rewards Club points for a Reward Night in three ways: using your existing points for all required points for the desired Reward Night; using your existing points and 5,000 points purchased for $40USD to total the required points; or using your existing points and 10,000 points purchased for $70USD to total the required points. The total purchase on any single day may not exceed $280USD.

When you book a rewards night, the points are instantly deducted from your account. Reward nights can be canceled easily as well. In general, reservations can be cancelled up to 4pm of the day before checking in; cancellation time may vary by location, so you can check the information when booking your room under “rate details”. When you cancel, your points will be reimbursed to your account.

Redeem PointBreaks

PointBreaks is one of the most rewarding promotions in the hotel industry, in which select IHG hotels can be booked for just 5,000 points per night. Every couple of months, IHG picks about 100 hotels to be part of the PointBreak promotion for the next few months. For the current period, there are 89 hotels on the list. This is a great redemption opportunity if you book high-end hotel brands. Each member can only book 2 PointBreaks Reward Nights reservations per hotel during the offer time period (the current period is from July 27 – October 31, 2015). There is also limited room availability; IHG often posts a preview of the list participating hotels a few days before booking is officially possible.

Redeem IHG points for airline miles

IHG Rewards Points can also be used toward airline miles. IHG’s partnership with over 400 air carriers, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airline and Alaska Airlines, allows points to be converted into frequent flier miles. However, to redeem points for airline miles, you have to contact your regional IHG Rewards Club Customer Care. The points will be converted at a 10,000-point minimum, and in increments of 1,000 points. When converting, both accounts must be under the same name. The posting time of frequent flyer miles varies by airline and can take up to six weeks to be credited to your frequent flyer account. Below is a list of redemption rates of IHG’s partner airlines.

Other ways to redeem IHG points

IHG rewards points can also be redeemed for gift cards, golf lessons, wine tours and other offers, as well as donated to charity. For example, you can redeem 20,000 points for a $50 Amazon gift card or 11,000 points for a $25 gift card. You can redeem for an Apple TV for 45,000 points. You can also purchase, transfer, or gift your points.

How to maximize your IHG Rewards points value

When redeeming points, you can compare the rewards earn rate of different redemption options to see if you are getting the most for your points. To estimate the rewards earn rate, divide the standard rate of the hotel stay by the number of IHG Rewards Points required to redeem one night. Let’s look at 2 Holiday Inn hotel stay redemption examples:

This Holiday Inn in Victorville, California has a nightly rate starting at $80.10, and requires 20,000 Reward points to redeem one night, so each point is roughly worth:

$80.10/20,000 = 0.004, or 0.4 cents per point

This is an example of a low value redemption. As a general rule, you want to aim for a rewards earn rate above 1 cent.

Here is another Holiday Inn located in downtown Long Beach, California. The rates start from $181.00 a night, and only requires 15,000 Rewards points to redeem one night.

$181.00/15,000 = 0.0121, or 1.21 cents per point

This redemption rate is already 3 times better than the Victorville Holiday Inn rate.

Calculating reward earn rates cannot account for all factors that go into making a hotel decision, but browsing around and comparing will definitely help you spot the better redemption options.

What’s a “night” vs. a “stay”?

A “night” is one night at any IHG hotel. A “stay” can be any number of consecutive nights at the same hotel, regardless of the frequency of check-in/check-out. A night or stay is “qualified” when you pay the qualifying room rate, which includes most business and leisure rates. Contact individual IHG hotels to confirm your stay is qualified.

The Fine Print

• Members will not earn points during a stay or retroactively on any reservations booked through Online Travel Agencies.
• Only one room will be credited per member per night; however, at U.S. and Canadian hotels (except InterContinental), you can collect miles on all eligible charges for multiple hotel rooms (less than 10), provided those rooms are used in conjunction with your stay at the same hotel, and your member number is recorded on each reservation, or the charges from those multiple room reservations are referred to on the hotel room bill associated with your reservation.
• Miles will not be issued if your room is paid for by a trade group, association, or company as part of a convention or group business meeting (10 rooms or more). If you stay at an IHG hotel under the terms of a contract or group commitment, you will not be eligible to receive points.
• Miles are not awarded for Reward Night stays; however, points are awarded for all other eligible charges to the member’s room (except InterContinental). Reward Night stays are defined as those in which a member redeems points for a Reward Night.
• IHG Army Hotels: All rewards members earn 3 hotel points/$1 USD regardless of earning preference when staying at an IHG Army Hotel.

Travelers can now stay connected during their trips, as Intercontinental Hotels Group offers complimentary internet for all loyalty program members with or without a hotel booking and/or qualifying stay. When Priority Club announced its rebranding as IHG, they began the transition with complimentary internet. Elite members were granted free internet around the world in 2013. In 2014, the group extended that to include hotel properties abroad for IHG all reward members.

What’s more,  Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn Hotels and Resorts in North America, Candlewood and Staybridge, offer free high-speed internet access in every guest room to all patrons as part of their amenities.

There are no special registrations, deposits, or fees. Just check-in, and then log in. Even visitors in the hotel lobbies will have free and unlimited access to the location’s internet.

These additions affect more than 4600 locations, making IHG the biggest group to offer this sort of agreement to its patrons. IHG’s reward program is also the industry’s largest. There are approximately 71 million people in the program, and these changes put IHG ahead of competitors. Other major chains like the Hilton, still only offer free internet to members with higher status.

What this means

IHG partners are counting on these changes to make customers happy. Since their rivals continue to charge for what is considered a basic amenity, this makes patrons more likely to be attracted by IHG’s offers. Guests, particularly the younger, technological generation, are accustomed to having public locations where wifi is free, and other essentials are readily available.

With free wifi access in lobbies, restaurants, bars, and cafes, even visitors who do not intend to stay overnight in the hotel will be drawn to the hotel’s amenity.

Why it matters

When researching and choosing a hotel, many patrons will often refuse to stay in a hotel that does not offer free internet; it is one of the most common factors customers consider when selecting a place to stay, particularly when those customers are travelling business people. As mobile technology has become standard for nearly all travelers, not offering free high-speed internet for guests leaves hotels behind the times. Guests have made this clear in hotel reviews; complaints about a hotel’s lack of free internet are some of the most common.
